I was born at Saint Joseph’s hospital in Burbank, California in 1991 to Susan and Nick. My mom was a nurse and my dad was an engineer for film composers. My mom passed away in 2019 and lived a rich, full life in her fifty-two years: working as a nurse, hospital administrator, managing the emergency department at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and finally in hospital research and consulting. Her last five years were spent in Donnelly, Idaho living the dream of hers and her second husband—my stepdad—Mike. My dad is a doctor now and works at Inglewood Hospital. When I was younger he worked on many many film score recordings with Marc Shaiman, Jerry Goldsmith, and others. I spent many weekend mornings in scoring sessions at Todd AO, Warner Brothers, Sony, etc. and many afternoons at Marc’s home studio in Laurel Canyon.
Marc’s Yamaha baby grand piano is now my piano and has been the inspiration and instrument for much of my own work. My wife Jenny and I built our studio around the baby grand in our garage at The Old Mill—a historic site in the Pasadena area where we lived and worked as its caretakers for eight years. In a deep exploration of recording history and equipment we have collected, restored, and let go of a handful of vintage microphones, tape machines, and various gear as a means of building our small but mighty studio collection. To me it’s neither all about the gear nor not about the gear… it’s about inspiration and freedom. I want to make something beautiful and I want to plug in a microphone and turn one knob and hear velvet in my ears.
